Alfa Romeo Stelvio set to be phased out by an e-SUV

According to Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato, the automaker plans to release an electric SUV by 2026 that would belong in the same class as the latest Stelvio (shown in the gallery and the video here). The move towards electric propulsion will not entail major design or ergonomic changes, as the Stelvio continues to be the marque’s most popular vehicle in Europe.

The all-electric counterpart of the SUV will run on the STLA Large platform designed by Stellantis. It may start as low as 350 PS (345 hp / 257 kW) and go as high as 800 PS (789 hp / 588 kW) in the Veloce version.

The same platform will underpin the electric successor to the Giulia saloon, which already has a 1,000-PS (986-hp / 735-kW) Quadrifoglio version coming soon. It is unknown whether a similar drivetrain was also considered for the SUV.

After releasing the electric SUV, the company plans to usher in a large battery sedan. Imparato has hinted that it could rival the likes of the Lucid Air and the Mercedes-Benz EQS while offering more than 700 km (435 miles) of range. Alfa Romeo CEO believes that new electric vehicles should be designed in such a way as to help buyers see them as an adequate replacement for their traditional ICE cars, and certainly not as trendy gimmicks they are being forced to switch to because of the green agenda.
