China developing its first Kei car ever for Japan

Chinese automaker BYD hopes to enter the Kei car market with a subcompact van of its own, AutoHome.cn reports posting some spy shots of it. The full premiere will likely take place at the Japan Mobility Show opening for the media on October 29, 2025.

In the meantime, the automaker has shared just one darkened teaser pic. It shows what looks like a nearly rectangular microvan with sliding rear doors and an impressively large glass dome. The rear pillars look unusual and make it seem like the roof is floating.

More details can be found in the spy shots further down the gallery. The still-unnamed Chinese Kei car has tiny triangular windows in its a-pillars for greater visibility and very short, almost nonexistent overhangs.

The publication believes that such a long wheelbase essentially guarantees an all-electric powertrain. If true, this microvan may offer a more practical alternative to Japan’s own Kei cars, most of which are still gas-powered and crampy. Some speculate that it may end up with a small 20-kWh battery pack WLTC-rated for 180 km (112 miles) of range per charge. While not much, it is nonetheless enough for most daily uses in Japan, the sources argue.
