Chevrolet Performance has unveiled its perhaps most impressive V8 to date, the ZZ632/1000. The unit is designed for use in drag racers and custom projects, and outputs 1,004 U.S. horsepower (1,018 PS / 750 kW) from its 10.4 liters of displacement.
In the model name, the number 632 refers to the volume in cubic inches, and the number 1000 means the target horsepower rating (rounded). It is a naturally aspirated Big Block mill loosely based on the 9.4-liter ZZ572 model.
The new cylinder housing is cast-iron, while the crankshaft is forged steel, the pistons are aluminum, all valves are the same length, and injection is electronic and distributed. The unit runs on ON98 fuel and supports a compression ratio of 12:1.
During OEM tests, it was able to exert 1,018 metric horsepower at 6,600 RPM and 1,188 Nm (876 lb-ft) of torque at 5,600 RPM. The company rated its resource for at least 200 drag strip launches.
As a crate engine, the ZZ632/1000 ships as a pre-assembled unit in a box for DIY projects. It is not street-legal and will not be used in a Chevrolet-badged production car. The pricing remains to be announced, but the ZZ572 model mentioned above cost U.S. $16,300.
