Gas Monkey Garage, a Texan car shop famous for its unorthodox automotive creations, has come to this year’s SEMA in Las Vegas with a downright ridiculous build of a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle. In addition to an all-new chassis and interior, the car wound up with a motor producing 1,217 PS (1,200 hp / 895 kW).
Full disclosure before we begin. The car is not for sale because it was created specifically for the CEO and owner of System X, a vendor specializing in body finishes. It is known as the Synister and is supposed to stay unique.
Despite the obvious visual similarity with the Chevelle, the restomod has virtually no original parts remaining. The entire body, chassis, interior and engine are new and bespoke. The result is wider and lower than the original coupe and boasts nice CNC-machined exterior details, like the radiator grill and the headlight wells.
In turn, SpeedTech Performance provides the fully independent suspension. The company claims the setup it came up with for this particular project lends itself just about equally well to serious racing and long-distance driving. You can spot those QA1 rear shocks protruding into the cabin. The arches are occupied by HRE wheels, and there are Wilwood calipers seen behind the spokes.
Power for the exclusive ride is provided by a 6.2-liter V8 sourced from a C7 Corvette. A turbocharger, custom manifolds and an all-new exhaust system drive its output to the aforementioned 1,200 U.S. horsepower, and Gas Monkey Garage claims it can do 200 hp more if the driver feels like it.
Rounding off the impressive project is an equally stunning interior with limited-edition carbon-backed Sparco seats, Audison Thesis premium speakers and other top-notch details.
