Elusive 1988 Italdesign Aztec can be yours for $0.4M

Back in the late ‘80s, Italdesign came up with an original roadster called the Aztec. Only between 15 and 20 units were made, and this example from Qatar is now up for grabs for a cool asking price of $390,000.

The car features a two-part cabin that, at a glance, seems to have two sets of controls. In reality, only the driver’s steering wheel on the left side is real. The right-hand-side wheel is a fake, but we are told that the gauges are functional at both sides. An intercom is also on board, so you don’t have to try and shout above the wind.

The double windshields in front of the seats don’t offer much wind protection, but the car comes bundled with a pair of removable glass domes for inclement weather.

An Audi five-pot supplies the power. The original plan was to use a 3.6-liter V8, but supply shortages at the time prompted Italdesign to replace it with an inline five-cylinder. It delivered roughly 203 PS (200 hp / 150 kW) in most cars, but the seller claims this particular example was tuned to 250 PS (246 hp / 186 kW). The mileage counter shows 12,300 km (7,643 miles) of use since 1988.
