Unique Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa underway to a new auction record

A 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa counted among the marque’s most exclusive, aesthetically perfect and universally loved creations is scheduled to cross the auction block at RM Sotheby’s in late February. With nearly two dozen races on record, the car is poised to sell for more than $50 million.

Only 33 such cars were produced from 1957 until 1961 (see video). Out of those, 19 wound up with a custom bodywork by Sergio Scaglietti. The example on sale had participated in 19 official motorsport events and won 4.

Since undergoing a complete restoration in 2013, it has sat in a private collection of a Ferrari fan from the United States. Making it especially valuable is the fact that it still retains its original 3.0-liter, naturally aspirated V12 and gearbox complete with their unique serial numbers. This means the drivetrain is still original.

Back in its prime, the engine pumped out 300 PS (296 hp / 221 kW). The earlier examples of the car came with a four-speed manual transmission, while those assembled from 1959 onwards had a five-speed manual gearbox.

Another 250 Testa Rossa just like this one went up on sale a decade ago and won $40 million. In November 2023, a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO brought its seller $51.7 million, setting an all-time high for cars sold at public auctions. It is thoroughly possible that the Testa Rossa heading to auction now smashes through that record.
