Elbow grease turns a venerable muscle car into a self-driving EV

The founder of Calimotive Auto Recycling spent a couple of years and $40,000 building a unique electric vehicle out of a 60-year-old Ford Mustang. The result is being touted as the world’s first non-Tesla car running on that company’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology.

The original plan was to equip the muscle car with a Model S powertrain, but it demanded major body modifications to fit properly. The tuner ultimately settled on a Model 3 powertrain instead, installing two e-motors along with a battery pack in a discreet way so as not to mess with the appearance of the classic ‘Stang.

Once the swap was complete, the car started sending 507 PS (500 hp / 373 kW) to the wheels, sprinting from zero to 96.6 km/h (60 mph) in 3.5 seconds. Inspired by this development, the builder installed a steering yoke sourced from a Cybertruck, Model 3 seats, a modern infotainment system with a 15-inch display, and surround-view cameras. He made sure to procure the latest Gen.4 hardware for the FSD, so it even receives regular over-the-air updates like a real Tesla car.

For better or worse, Calimotive Auto Recycling has no current plans to build more Mustangs like this one. The man behind the build drives it himself every day, so it doesn’t seem to be up for sale, either.
