GAC patents a plug-in hybrid MPV

GAC has released the first photos of E8 PHEV, a minivan whose name suggests a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. Here’s what CarNewsChina was able to learn about it.

The E8 is 4,920 mm long, 1,900 mm wide and 1,760 mm tall with 2,930 mm between the axles. It has solid light stripes between its headlights and taillights and boasts illuminated logos, too. The vertical DRL sections have dotted-line light patterns.

C-pillars concealed behind glass and chrome moldings create the impression of a ‘floating’ roof. A closer look at the latter reveals two hatches – one above the first seat row and the other above the second and third rows.

While not official, the E8 PHEV is expected to go on sale with either a 1.8-liter or a 2.0-liter petrol engine acting purely as a range extender for the main electric motor. The output is estimated at 133-140 horsepower (~100 kilowatts). GAC also has a 25.6-kWh traction battery at its disposal, which may or may not be used in this minivan. An all-electric version may become available later.

The larger GAC E9 MPV (see video) is on sale in China right now for 330,000–390,000 Yuan. The E8 will likely be less expensive, but all pricing details remain to be announced. Media in China believe that pre-orders will open before the end of the year.
