Jetta X Concept reveals the brand’s strategic pivot in China

As you may have heard, Volkswagen decided to distill its Jetta nameplate into a whole separate sub-brand specializing in cheap ICE cars for China and beyond. Co-founded with FAW Group, the brand has now announced a direction switch towards electrified transports.

The company assures us that it will do everything to keep the prices down to around 100,000 Chinese Yuan, which converts into U.S. $14,650. Design-wise, its cars will adhere to a style known as “Modern Robust”. Judging by the Jetta X Concept seen above, it looks similar to what Renault and Dacia are doing with their crossover SUVs. Sharp edges, boxy outlines, flared fenders and unpainted body kit parts made from cheap plastic sum up to form a distinct aesthetic. The backlit Jetta badge at the front looks mildly tweaked from its earlier version, and the lettering in the back is illuminated, too.

All technical specifications will have to wait until later. Jetta claims it will unveil no less than four new vehicles in the near future, the first of these slated for launch in China later this year.
