McLaren is accepting pre-orders for a car shrouded in mystery

McLaren discontinued its 720S supercar at the end of the last year, Automotive News reports citing Nicolas Brown, CEO of the automaker’s U.S. branch. The successor to that car is now under development and is available to pre-order – even though we know literally nothing about it at the moment.

The McLaren 720S (see the gallery and the video) debuted in 2017 with a four-liter V8 under the hood producing 720 PS (710 hp / 530 kW) and 770 Nm (568 lb-ft) of torque. Combined with a low curb weight of 1.3 metric tons (roughly 2,850 pounds), it enabled the supercar to sprint 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 2.9 seconds and ultimately hit 341 km/h (212 mph).

According to Nicolas Brown, the marque’s fans realize that the successor to the iconic 720S could hardly be expected to be an all-new, made-from-scratch vehicle. The obvious implication is that it could be essentially a reworked 720S instead of something different. At any rate, we cannot say anything for sure, except that the model is now on backorder until the end of 2024.

In earlier news, we learned that McLaren was planning to unveil two EVs, but it is doubtful that those would join the manufacturer’s super sports car lineup. On one occasion, representatives of the company pointed out that the company wanted to try its hand at sedan and crossover/SUV production.
