Mercedes previews a 830-PS AMG GT for private drivers

The track-only Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16 looks like the current race car of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas team and is coming to the market limited to 30 units priced from €679,000 (nearly $800,000) each.

Like all other AMG GTs, this one packs a 4.0-liter V8 under the hood, but it takes advantage of superior turbos and electronics. As a result, it makes 830 PS (819 hp / 610 kW) and over 1,000 Nm (738 lb-ft) of torque at the crank. It’s also fairly lightweight at 1,430 kilos (3,152 lbs).

However, Mercedes points out that the nominal output is only available for a short time after pressing a button labeled “Push2Pass”. It temporarily raises the boost pressure to extract an additional 100 PS (99 hp / 74 kW) and 200 Nm (148 lb-ft) of torque from the powertrain.

Still, if you accept the nominal performance of the GT2 Edition W16 as standard, it will be the most powerful GT ever built by AMG. It checks out in other respects, too. For example, the car can accelerate past 322 km/h (200 miles per hour) on a six-speed sequential transmission.

The standard spec includes four-way adjustable racing-spec shock absorbers and roll stabilizers. It also includes an active aero kit with front louvers and an automatic rear wing.

On the outside, the new special edition wears the same livery as the Mercedes F1 race car. It also bears the autograph of Kimi Antonelli, one of the AMG Petronas drivers. Later this fall, Antonelli will participate in a special event where all cars will be delivered to their owners along with a pair of racing overalls and a helmet.
