According to Michael Schiebe, the leader of the Mercedes-AMG division, most drivers of V8-powered cars will have no problem whatsoever switching to electric propulsion when it is ready.
Speaking in a recent interview, Schiebe opined that most AMG brand customers didn’t buy V8 cars for their cylinder count – rather, they bought them for their overall technological excellence. If one were to assume that this hypothesis is true, then these drivers would be happy to upgrade to an even more technologically advanced EV – at least according to Schiebe, that is.
On a side note, Jaime Cohen, the head of the AMG branch in Australia, used similar reasoning to explain why the luxury-laden Mercedes-AMG C 63 S saloon had a tiny 2.0-liter turbo engine under the hood. He said that “technology is evolving” and compared cars to cell phones: soon after smartphones became a thing, people stopped using classic phones with physical buttons and never looked back.
Honestly, we’d be interested in seeing how this mode of thinking pans out for AMG in the near future.
