Check out the elusive Mercedes-Benz AMG Hammer Coupe

The seller of the two-door car claims it is one out of only five such vehicles made for the USA. The bidding has already climbed to $288,888 with several days remaining on the clock.

The Hammer was an AMG-made custom car built in the late 1980s, before the company’s merger with Mercedes-Benz. Back at the time, the tuners picked the 300E sedan for their custom projects, believing it could become a worthy rival of the BMW M5 with some mods. They later on experimented with a coupe variant, but it was much less popular. According to unofficial sources, only 30 such customs were made, including 13 for the USA, only 5 out of them coupes.

The conversion involved removing the stock 300E engine and putting a V8 into its place. The displacement volume was then increased from 5.6 to 6 liters, resulting in a peak output of 385 PS (380 hp / 283 kW) and 564 Nm (416 lb-ft) of torque. The transmission received a number of upgrade components borrowed from Mercedes flagships, and some custom-fabricated parts found use in the suspension as well. On the outside, you could recognize the AMG Hammer by its light body kit and tuner’s own branded wheels.

According to the listing, the example on sale has barely more than 31,000 kilometers (19,000 miles) under its belt and had stood motionless for decades until a full restoration last year. The seller claims the car is pristine and free from all kinds of usage marks, which we find easy to believe looking at the photos of the grey leather cabin with zebrano wood inserts.

An auction representative points out that this is the first AMG Hammer Coupe traded in a public auction.
