One of Koenig’s earliest Mercedes-Benz customs crops up for $49k

A rare 1973 Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC tuned by Koenig Specials in Germany is now being offered on eBay. It resides in Florida and could be one of Willy Koenig’s earliest works, since the tuning company only opened for business in 1974. The asking price is just $49,000, but that’s likely due to the mileage.

Compared to its factory-stock counterpart, this particular 450 SLC wears an advanced aero kit with redesigned bumpers, flared wheel arches, Ferrari Testarossa-inspired side trims with fake air vents, and a sizeable rear wing complemented by an integrated trunk lid spoiler. It rides on multi-piece BBS wheels, but the listing doesn’t say whether they were also installed at Koenig.

If you look inside, there’s red leather all around, floor mats with eye-catching Persian ornaments, and a KS Italvolanti steering wheel. Once again, we suspect that at least the mats were added after the fact, possibly by one of the later owners of the car.

What remains unknown is whether there have been any engine modifications. In stock form, the Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC came equipped with a 4.5-liter V8 mill partnered with a three-speed automatic transmission for 225 PS (222 hp / 165 kW) and 377 Nm (278 lb-ft) of torque. This example has covered more than 240,000 kilometers (150,000 miles) since, so it’s safe to expect a little world-weariness from it.
