Study discovers massive price increases on Japanese classic cars

Insurance provider Hagerty has studied the market of used Japanese cars produced back in the 1980s and ‘90s and discovered a serious rise in prices across the board. Here are the top 10 models affected the most.

Leading the list is the R33 generation of the Nissan Skyline GT‐R (prod. 1995–1998). The sports car has gained 52% in price over the first half of 2021 and now goes for U.S. $68,000 standard, $124,000 V‐Spec N1, and $440,000 Nismo 400R (featured in the video here).

Datsun 280ZX (prod. 1978–1983) takes the second place. The mean price has been steadily climbing over the past half-decade and now amounts to $24,200, a 50% increase over the $16,100 from six years ago.

Rounding off the trio of overachievers is the Mk2 Toyota Supra (prod. 1982–1986). The study points out that the reasons behind this particular price hike have more to do with the rarity of the model than its practical qualities. Simply speaking, it’s very difficult to find a well-preserved example nowadays. The growth in the first half of 2021 amounted to 44% (from $15,600 to $22,500), and the price has roughly tripled over the past decade.

The top ten ranking goes on to mention Nissan 300ZX, Honda Civic Si, Datsun 260Z, Mitsubishi Starion, Nissan Figaro, and Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60/62, in that order.
