While unveiling its next big thing – the crossover utility vehicle called R2 – Rivian has also previewed a smaller counterpart to it known as the R3. There are still no technical specs and the production is far away, but here’s what we already know.
The compact car has a wheelbase spanning roughly 2.8 meters (9.2 ft.) and comes with a wide range of powertrains to choose from, including single-, dual- and triple-motor options. In this sense, it isn’t inferior to its senior cousins R1S and R2.
Opting for the longest-range version will get you as far as 483 km (300 miles) on a charge. Choosing to maximize the power will net you a sub-3-second sprint time from zero to 96.6 km/h (60 mph). Recharging from 10 to 80 percent will take less than half an hour given a sufficiently powerful source.
Aside from the standard R3 model, there will be an X version sporting orange accents and exclusive trim details inside and out. Both models seem to have the same dashboard layout with hardly any physical buttons and a large display in the middle. Other than that, it remains to be seen how the X trim will be different from standard.
As we reported earlier today, the larger Rivian R2 is scheduled to reach the market in the second half of 2026. The company still doesn’t even have a factory to produce it at – its construction was recently put on hold halfway in. Since the R3 is slated to arrive after the R2, we’d say it’s still too early to talk about any specifications or prices.
