Tesla considers launching a robotaxi service

Elon Musk’s new tweet caused a stir among investors as Tesla CEO asked whether it wasn’t about time the company launched a robotic taxi service for carrying around both passengers and cargo.

As usual with Musk, his intentions can be impossible to see through, but the suggestion seems sound. Musk’s other pet project, The Boring Company, creates Hyperloop tunnels below ground to enable rapid transit of Tesla EVs between select destinations (see the gallery). If he were to repurpose these tunnels to carry special autonomous pods instead, the taxi dream might have become a reality.

As for new releases in 2022, it looks like there won’t be any, as Tesla is currently focusing all efforts on producing more Model 3 and Model Y units. The Cybertruck is still scheduled to reach production in Q1 2023, but the last time we saw it was at the Gigafactory Texas launch, and it was still a pretty raw prototype back then. It remains open whether Tesla will deliver it on time, or delay yet again.
