New VW Amarok will dress like an off-roader, but won’t be one

The next generation of the Volkswagen Amarok premiered last week based on the Ford Ranger chassis. Since the latter has an off-road version called the Everest, this made some of us wonder whether the Amarok could follow suit.

CarExpert.com.au asked VW Executive VP Lars Krause if such a version was possible for the second-gen Amarok. He said ‘no’, but promised a rugged equipment pack that should make the pickup more appealing to active leisure enthusiasts.

Depending on the market, the new truck ships with six diesel engines to choose from, rated from 150 to 250 PS (148 – 247 hp; 110 – 184 kW, respectively) and an EcoBoost V6 burning gasoline for 302 PS (298 hp / 222 kW). Transmissions include five-speed manual, six-speed manual, six-speed auto and ten-speed auto.
