Volkswagen Arteon leaves the U.S. market

Volkswagen will end the production of its Arteon sedan for the North American market after the current model year, Carscoops reports referencing e-mails sent by the automaker to U.S. dealerships. The electric ID.7 will become its de-facto successor.

The VW Arteon starts from $43,000 in the United States right now, which is fairly high for its intended target audience. Once it is gone, Volkswagen’s gas-powered light passenger car lineup on the North American continent will be limited to the various Jetta editions including GLI. No matter what trim level you choose, the Jetta is about twice as affordable as the Arteon.

Low demand is the most logical explanation for the discontinuation. In the first half of 2023, VW has sold just 16,224 Jetta units in the USA and a dismal 1,155 Arteon units, setting an anti-record with the latter. The last year’s results were even worse – 170 Arteons sold in six months.

The all-electric Volkswagen ID.7, which has already debuted in Europe, is expected to fill in the gap left by the Arteon in the USA. The only caveat is that it won’t arrive there until model year 2025.
