Volvo EX90 debuts in Europe with up to 517 PS, €105k starting price

Volvo’s new flagship – the all-electric EX90 touted as the brand’s safest, strongest and most expensive production car to date – is here at last, with the prices in Germany starting from €105,550.

The seven-seater retains the signature design of the XC90, but sports a more level hood and a solid stub in place of the radiator grille. To maximize the aerodynamic efficiency, it has flush door handles and a flat undercarriage.

By default, the SUV gets Matrix LED headlights and 21-inch wheels. Folding the second and third seat rows frees 1,915 liters (67.6 cubic feet) of luggage space. With all seats in place, the trunk is rather small at 310 liters (11 cubic feet). There is also a 37-liter (1.3-cu.ft.) frunk for miscellanea.

All Volvo EX90 modifications will come equipped with two motors mounted one per axle, meaning that AWD is standard across the range. In its most affordable version, the EV commands 408 PS (402 hp / 300 kW) and 770 Nm (568 lb-ft) of torque. It needs 5.9 seconds to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph).

Shelling out on the top spec in Europe gives you 517 PS (510 hp / 380 kW) and a 4.9-second sprint time. Buyers in the United States get a slightly different version with 503 horsepower. There is only one battery pack on offer right now, which holds up to 111 kilowatt-hours and translates into 585 km (363 miles) of WLTP-rated range for the basic spec. The top spec is rated only 5 km (3 miles) below that.

The interior follows a minimalist theme with a modest-sized digital dash and a 14.5-inch touchscreen in the middle. Physical buttons are nowhere to be found, but sensors are abundant all around, including the ceiling. Parents leaving their children in the car will be immediately notified, and in the meantime, the EX90 will turn on the HVAC and display a message on the infotainment screen notifying the passers-by that everything is under control.

Another highlight comes in the form of a system monitoring the driver’s state through multiple video cameras and offering assistance if the driver is tired or otherwise cannot concentrate.
