Ford Ranger gets ready for Baja 1000

Ford and Australian tuning company Kelly Racing have joined forces to produce a hardcore off-roader based on the maxed-out Ranger Raptor. The car will participate in the next Baja 1000 rally, but the manufacturer openly admits that victory isn’t the goal.

Instead, the engineering department considers the rally a test of sorts that will help it measure the performance of various systems and demonstrate the potential of biofuel to the general public. The powertrain is not mentioned in the press release, so we are going with the assumption that it is the traditional 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 rated at 397 PS (392 hp / 292 kW) in Australia.

What we do know is that the engine was modified to run on Shell biofuel consisting of 33% ethanol and 33% low-carbon biomineral oil. Cynthia Williams, global Director for Sustainability at Ford, pointed out that the goal was to promote environmentally clean sources of energy.

Other notable modifications include a large snorkel pipe, an upgraded cargo bed for carrying spare wheels and tools, a new front bumper and a light bar.
