Reports: Kia Rio leaves the U.S. market for good

According to Automotive News citing its own sources, Kia intends to remove the Rio hatchback from sale in the United States before the end of the year. Europe should follow suit in 2024.

The reasons aren’t official yet, but it is possible that the still-growing SUV and crossover market is hurting the demand for the Rio. Despite its attractive entry-level pricing (from $16,750), the hatchback has found only around 27,000 owners in the entire last year.

Things are looking different in Europe, where the Rio may end up discontinued because Kia needs to keep it compliant with the strict environmental laws, and the R&D costs may not be justifiable.

If the Rio does leave the U.S. market, the country will be stranded with just one car actually priced below $20,000 – the Nissan Versa. There is also the $16,500 Mitsubishi Mirage five-door hatch, but that one is also retiring soon.
