Mazda will be bringing the fourth-gen Toyota Yaris to Europe in two years’ time, fitting it with the Toyota Hybrid System (THS) powertrain. The car will likely phase out the Mazda 2 model featured in our gallery and the video.
The decision is likely Mazda’s attempt to avoid CO2 emission fines: the Mazda 2 produces 94 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer, while the Yaris only generates between 64 and 73 grams.
The Mazda 2 model currently on the market is only available in an M Hybrid form that combines a 1.5-liter Skyactiv-G gasoline engine with a small electric motor and a manual transmission. Two modifications are available, specifically 75 PS / 135 Nm and 90 PS / 148 Nm. The former needs 11.4 seconds to reach 100 km/h (62 mph), and the latter is barely faster with 9.8 seconds. The top speeds amount to 171 and 183 km/h (106 and 113 mph), respectively. The lower spec consumes 5.3 liters of gas per 100 km (WLTP) and starts from €13,833 new.
The EU-spec, five-door Yaris Hybrid hatch packs a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated three-cylinder mill worth 92 PS and 120 Nm, an electric motor adding 80 PS and 141 Nm, and an E-CVT transmission. The total output does not exceed 116 PS, and the sprint time amounts to 9.7 seconds. Top speed lies at 175 km/h (108 mph), and the car consumes between 2.8 and 3.2 liters of gas per 100 km. Prices in Germany start from €25,139.
