McLaren F1 creator’s lesser-known sports car goes on sale

Engineer Gordon Murray is primarily famous for creating the McLaren F1, but he has a host of smaller projects in his portfolio. This car, dubbed the Rocket, was produced by Light Car Company in 50 or less units and is now being traded in the USA with the bidding at $75,000 and a few days remaining on the clock.

Murray designed the LLC Rocket together with British racing driver Chris Craft. It received an exterior somewhat reminiscent of vintage Formula racecars with their exposed wheels, but features a second seat installed directly behind the driver’s.

Power comes from a 1.0-liter Yamaha bike engine, hitting the wheels with 145 PS (143 hp / 107 kW) through a five-speed sequential gearbox. The whole car weighs just 385 kilograms, or 850 pounds, and rides on Bilstein and OZ suspension components.

The Rockets were made in 1991–2000, but this specific example rolled off the line in 1996. It received an upgraded engine with improved pistons and valves, as well as a displacement upgrade to 1,170cc. It can rev up to 11,500 RPM.

Whoever buys the car will be getting a handful of factory options with it – Hella headlights, a stainless-steel exhaust system and a detachable aerodynamic cowling supposed to be installed above the passenger seat. With less than 3,400 km (2,110 miles), the car is almost new.
