Toyota Land Cruiser 70 drops its most reliable engine

The Toyota Land Cruiser 70, which has only recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, is no longer being offered with its most robust and long-lasting engine.

The mill in question is a 4.5-liter turbo diesel V8 known as the 1VD-FTV. It outputs 205 PS (202 hp / 152 kW) and 430 Nm (310 lb-ft) of torque, and is mainly found in the Land Cruisers sold in Australia.

Now that the 1VD-FTV is gone for good, customers Down Under are left with a much less exciting 1GD-FTV model. It has four cylinders and sends 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW) to the wheels along with 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque. The same engine had also been offered in some Middle East countries, where it received no replacement. Customers can still choose from multiple petrol options, though.

Commenting on the decision, Toyota simply stated that it was the ever-stricter emission laws that prompted it to abandon the diesel V8.
