Toyota Land Cruiser Prado goes diesel-electric in Europe

The Euro-spec Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (see video), known in other markets as the Land Cruiser 250 or simply the Land Cruiser, is now finally obtainable with a hybrid powertrain. It combines an old 2.8-liter turbo diesel rated at 203 PS (200 hp / 149 kW) with a 48V starter-generator for efficiency.

This compact motor can rev up to 16 PS (16 hp / 12 kW) and 65 Nm (48 lb-ft) of torque, helping the SUV start from standstill and ride over off-road obstacles, Toyota argues. It is also responsible for regenerative braking, making the deceleration smoother and more controllable, and saves fuel in start-stop mode. Power for the motor comes from a small 4.3-Ah battery hidden under the trunk floor and weighing as little as 7.6 kilograms (16.75 lbs).

Toyota emphasizes that the electrification doesn’t compromise the Land Cruiser’s off-road capabilities in any way. All new components are installed securely to rule out spontaneous damage. For example, the hybrid Land Cruiser Prado for Europe can wade water up to 700 mm (27.3 inches) tall – just like its non-electric counterpart.

The first customer deliveries are scheduled for late 2025. The ICE Land Cruiser Prado is on its way out of the EU, so the hybrid will soon be the only one available.
