The colorful BMW X7 Nishiki Lounge Concept introduced early this year is now officially coming to Japan as a limited edition. Aside from a two-tone paint job inspired by the 7-Series, it comes with as many as 12 interior trim options to choose with, all of them new and original designs.
The upper body of the X7 Nishiki Lounge is finished in Space Silver and the lower body in Individual Velvet. The automaker claims they are supposed to remind viewers of “a moon shining in the dark night sky”. The interior is arguably still more expressive with its vibrant patterns on the transmission tunnel, dashboard and door panels. Multiple layers of high-reflective foil are used to create this unusual visual effect, held together with a special lacquer instead of glue for some extra shine.
Another highlight is the floor mats. Provided by Kawashima Selkon Textiles, one of the country’s oldest textile businesses in existence, they are woven from seven types of twisted yarn using an ancient weaving technique known as the kasuri. It involves using threads woven from five differently colored strands and is not automated – the entire process is manual.
Only authorized dealerships will be selling these cars in Japan, so don’t bother looking for them in the official online configurator. You can choose between two variants, xDrive40d and M60i, both priced at a ¥5.5 million (roughly $37,000) premium over the standard SUV.
Back when it unveiled the Nishiki Lounge in February 2025 (see video), BMW didn’t reveal any release plans. The car was presented as a one-off collaboration of several local shops, created to pay homage to the timeless craft of the Japanese artisans.
