Formula I racecar maker previews a cheap monocoque for street-legal supercars

UK-based company Dash-CAE specializes in manufacturing carbon-fiber components for Formula One racecars and the aeronautical industry. It has now decided to try something different with a street-legal supercar monocoque priced under £30,000 (38,000 USD) – around half as much as similar solutions typically cost, the press release claims.

The carbon ‘bathtub’ proposed by the company is meant to be supported by two subframes at the front and the rear end. Using it, third-party carmakers can design cars however they want with the key load-bearing part already in place and everything ready for the interior works.

The chassis weighs less than 50 kilograms (110 pounds) and therefore lends itself best for supercars – whether running on gas, hybrid power or electricity. The vendor claims it complies with all relevant safety requirements.

Dash-CAE believes its ready-made monocoque will be most interesting to smaller businesses that produce limited quantities of supercars and are often unable to afford full development cycles. Having said that, the company hopes major automakers will also find use for it.
