Ineos Grenadier gets a powerful engine tune-up, but there’s a catch

U.S.-based Burger Motorsports has released an interesting tuning package for the Defender-inspired Ineos Grenadier. The off-roader gains plenty of extra power and torque and can be further tuned to use ethanol instead of gas – but good luck making it street-legal.

The package is called JB4 and is already available for ordering from $599, the company says. Once installed, it pushes the off-roader’s BMW-sourced six-cylinder engine to pump out an additional 81 PS (80 hp / 60 kW) along with 135 Nm (100 lb-ft) of torque, for a new total of 316 PS (312 hp / 232 kW) and 575 Nm (424 lb-ft).

The company claims that both figures were measured at the wheels, so the numbers at the crank should be even more impressive. Note, however, that letting the boost pressure rise too fast at lower RPMs (like around 2,000) may cause a loss of traction and – worst case scenario – result in a snapped axle shaft. To avoid this, Burger Motorsports suggests using a dedicated phone app to set safe boost pressure limits for all RPMs.

Aside from this tune, the company is currently working on an external ECU that will let the Grenadier use corn-derived bioethanol fuel instead of gasoline. The problem is, the JB4 kit isn’t street-legal and is supposed to be used exclusively on the racetrack. As an alternative, you could try legalizing it for your off-roader in your state of residence – provided you know what you are doing, of course.
