Nio ET9 bows in China

Chinese electric car maker Nio has unveiled its latest production model – a large sedan named the ET9. You can already pre-order it from 800,000 Yuan ($112,800) as long as you are prepared to wait until Q1 2025 for the delivery.

The car is sized 5,324 x 2,016 x 1,620 millimeters large with 3,250 mm between the axles (L: 208”, W: 78.7”, H: 63.3”, WB: 127”). The interior offers four individual seats with plenty of adjustments, heating, ventilation and massage included in the base spec. Those in the back row also get separate multimedia displays, folding tables, wireless charging pads for smartphones and a minibar with a fridge.

For the powertrain, the ET9 relies on a 180kW electric motor driving the front wheels and a 340kW one driving the rear ones. The combined output is 520 kilowatts, or 707 horsepower. The battery pack consists of Nio’s proprietary 46105-standard cylindrical power cells and stores up to 120 kilowatt-hours of energy. Plugging the car into a 640kW charging device replenishes 255 km (158 miles) of range in five minutes. Nio plans to start installing such terminals throughout China in a few months. Those who would rather just have their battery pack swapped can do so at supported charging stations in just three minutes.

The ET9 is also the Chinese company’s first flagship electric car to have steering-by-wire implemented and to feature an in-house self-driving system. According to the engineering team behind it, the system is on par with the Nvidia Drive Orin autopilot used in some other Nio vehicles.

As one would expect from a cutting-edge EV, the Nio ET9 has sophisticated chassis and suspension. Its active electrohydraulic shocks can adjust the ground clearance within the range of 50 mm (2 inches) over a single second, while its all-wheel steering system turns the rear wheels by up to 8.3 degrees when needed.
