Porsche 911 Turbo S goes hybrid for the first time

Porsche has brought the 911 Turbo S facelift to the Munich show – and it’s a hybrid. Prices in Germany start from €271,000.

The sports car now outputs 711 PS (701 hp / 523 kW) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque, the latter available from 2,300 all the way through 6,000 RPM. The 3.6-liter flat-six comes from the Carrera GTS, but benefits from dual electric turbochargers instead of just one. The eTurbo system has servomotors mounted on its turbine shafts to pre-spin the turbos in advance. A single electric motor built into an eight-speed PDK transmission sources its power from a 1.9-kWh battery pack (same as the Carrera GTS).

The AWD coupe needs 2.5 seconds to go from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph), shaving 0.2 seconds off the sprinting speed of its predecessor. It also hits 200 km/h (124 mph) in 8.4 seconds, coming a half of a second ahead the gas-powered Turbo S. The top speed is capped at 322 km/h (200 mph). The best time on the North Loop went down 14 seconds to 7 minutes 3.92 seconds.

Along with a modern powertrain, the new 911 Turbo S gets 10mm (0.4”) wider rear tires, and carbon-ceramic brakes with larger 410mm (16”) discs at the rear axle. The front axle keeps using its 420mm (16.4”) discs. Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control is now included as standard, so active roll stabilization is no longer a premium option. You are still expected to pay extra for the front-axle auto-lift, though.

Like the Carrera GTS, the new Turbo S wears an active aero kit including vertical louvers in the front bumper and an active rear wing. They work together to increase downforce and reduce drag (Porsche reports a 10% improvement in the drag ratio). As a neat bonus, the louvers close shut during rain, lowering the amount of water ingress into the front brakes. Last but not least, the company reports a 6.8-kg (15-lb) reduction in the exhaust system weight.
