Toyota Land Cruiser 70 keeps diesel V8 alive Down Under

Having announced the new Land Cruiser Prado and the updated Land Cruiser 70 for Japan, Toyota proceeded to unveil a refreshed 70 for Australia. The off-roader will be available with a new four-cylinder diesel Down Under, as well as the familiar 4.5-liter V8.

In Australia, the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 is being sold in multiple flavors: as a utilitarian truck chassis with either single or double cab, and as an SUV. All these versions will be getting the same visual updates as the version for Japan: round LED headlights, redesigned grille, and so on. Higher trim levels will get you a 4.2-inch digital dash screen and a 6.7-inch infotainment display.

Like on its domestic market, the 2024 Land Cruiser 70 will be available in Australia with a robust 2.8-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque. However, it will also be available with the old 4.5-liter diesel V8 capable of 205 PS (202 hp / 152 kW) and 430 Nm (321 lb-ft).

Why did Toyota leave the old engine alive on the southern continent? First, because it needs to have the customers looking for affordable commercial vehicles covered. Second, because the four-pot is available exclusively with a six-speed auto transmission, while the V8 goes five-speed manual.

Among other things, the refreshed Land Cruiser 70 received a number of useful electronic assists, like traffic sign detection, automatic high beams and lane control.
