Next-gen Volvo XC70 reaches China first

Volvo has started taking orders for the next-generation Volvo XC70, which has transformed from a wagon into an SUV. Prices vary from 299,900 to 329,900 Yuan depending on the trim. Europe is next in line to receive it.

Sized 4,815 x 1,890 x 1,650 mm (188.1 x 73.8 x 64.5 inches) large with a 2,895-mm (113.1-inch) wheelbase, it sits between the XC60 and the XC90 in terms of exterior dimensions. It sports T-shaped DRLs composed of 41 LEDs each and rides on wheels up to 21 inches large. Customers can choose from seven available exterior colors.

Underpinning the ride is Geely’s familiar SMA architecture. In the most basic spec, the new XC70 has a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a single e-motor, both driving the front axle with no other options. The former produces 163 PS (161 hp / 120 kW) and the latter 145 PS (143 hp / 107 kW), taking it from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in full eight seconds. A 21.2-kWh battery delivers 116 kilometers (72 miles) of all-electric range.

A higher spec introduces all-wheel drive thanks to a 212-PS (209-hp / 156-kW) rear motor. This one has a 5.3-second sprint time and covers up to 180 km (112 miles) on electricity alone thanks to a much larger 39.6-kWh battery pack. With the gas tank full, it can do 1,200 km (745 miles), the manufacturer reckons.

Charging the CATL-branded batteries from zero to 80% only takes 23 minutes with a fast enough charger. Even if the battery runs out of juice, the engine should deliver a fuel economy of 5.85 to 6.55 liters per 100 kilometers, which is considered pretty solid. That’s 36–40 miles per U.S. gallon.

The equipment list is quite generous, mentioning seven airbags, an infotainment system with OTA updates based on two displays sized 12.3 and 15.4 inches, a modest-sized screen for the rear passengers and an ADAS package. The latter includes 24 sensors and cameras largely remaining operational at speeds up to 150 km/h (93 mph). A 92-inch HUD projector and a Harman Kardon audio system are optional.

Design-wise, the new XC70 sports a rather unusual stacked center console. Its upper part with the cup holders can be retracted into the armrest for convenience.
