Xiaomi expects to enter EU market in 2027

The Chinese IT-corporation-turned-automaker has just revealed its export plans, reports CNEVpost quoting Xiaomi Group President Lu Weibing. The company reckons it can expand to Europe in a few years, but has to contend with low domestic production rates and mounting losses first.

Weibing admitted that preparation to enter the EU region was already underway. According to him, analysts have been studying the most viable market niches to fill and target audiences to pursue. In an earlier statement, he said that the company was getting ready to offer its vehicles outside of China, but didn’t specify where.

It’s worth noting that right now, Xiaomi is still struggling to meet even the domestic demand for its electric vehicles. According to CNEVpost, the SU7 sedan is currently on a 41-week-long backorder and the YU7 SUV is even worse off with a 58-week waiting queue (that’s longer than a year). However, the company is ramping up its production capacities quickly and expects the waiting times to go down soon. In Q2 2025, Xiaomi shipped a record 81,300 EVs.

Mounting losses are another major challenge for the automaker. In the same Q2, the company reported a loss of 300,000,000 CNY (roughly 42,000,000 USD) generated by its EV and AI technology departments combined. Despite looking bad on paper, these numbers are slowly getting smaller. In Q1, for example, the losses amounted to 500,000,000 CNY (nearly $70,000,000).

Losses per vehicle shipped are arguably a better performance indicator here. In early spring, Xiaomi reported losing around 6,500 CNY per vehicle made ($908). By late Q2, it managed to get this number down to just 3,700 CNY ($517), CarNewsChina reports.

Lu Weibin insists that most of the losses reported are generated by the company’s ongoing major investments into new business directions. Progressing at its current pace, Xiaomi Cars can expect to break even and become profitable before the end of the year, he claims. Most of the profit is expected to come from launching the second assembly line in China, which is almost ready.
