Spied: Battery-powered BMW X5 M hits the road

Based on these spy photos posted on Carscoops, the M version of the electric BMW X5 is getting ready for launch this summer, almost guaranteed to make more than 600 PS (592 hp / 441 kW) at the wheels.

There are several indications that this particular test vehicle is an M version. First, it sports a rather aggressive front bumper with oversized air intakes. Second, it features a rear spoiler. Third, it runs on what looks like five-spoke forged wheels shod in Michelin Pilot Sport tires, and the brakes behind the spokes look like a performance model, too.

Although the regular BMW iX5 has yet to debut, it has nonetheless been spotted on the roads before, looking much less sporty compared to the car above.

As for the powertrains, we have China’s Ministry of Industry database to thank for revealing the specifications of the standard iX5 60 SUV. It is set to debut in China with two electric motors making 576 PS (568 hp / 424 kW) in total. It is also expected to take advantage of a particularly large battery pack rated at an impressive 147.8 kilowatt-hours.

Considering the above, the iX5 M is all but guaranteed to have at least 600 metric horsepower. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it pack as much as 700 PS (690 hp / 515 kW).

The premiere of the next-generation BMW X5 remains scheduled for later this summer. It will mark the first time in the Bavarian automaker’s history when a single model will get five different powertrain options ranging from ICE through hybrid to all-electric.
