For the first time on record, the flagship of the compact-sized BMW 2-Series is available with the company’s xDrive AWD. Buyers may also look forward to a tuned engine, faster launch times and optimized fuel economy. The production starts in August, and all prices are pending.
The new BMW M2 is a modification of the current generation, so it shares most of the tech with it. In particular, it still relies on a 3.0-liter inline-six turbo to output 480 PS (473 hp / 353 kW) to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The peak torque has been raised by 50 Nm (36 lb-ft) to 600 Nm (443 lb-ft).
Most of the time, the car automatically determines whether it needs four driven wheels or just two. It switches to RWD to save gas and utilizes an innovative pre-chamber ignition system known as M Ignite to further improve fuel economy. Drivers can also manually toggle the front-axle coupling on and off for a desired experience.
The new M2 sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds, coming ahead of the standard version with its 4.0 seconds. The top speed rests at the usual 250 km/h (155 mph), but the electronic limiter can be lifted to 285 km/h (177 mph) for a premium. Torque control, an active differential and M Compound performance brakes are also listed under standard equipment.
On the outside, the M2 xDrive doesn’t look any different from its RWD sibling, although owners can opt for a new exterior shade called Borusan Turkish Blue. The production will take place in Mexico, with the completed cars set to ship to North America, Germany and China first and foremost.
