It’s Official: Chevrolet Bolt EV gets the axe, but the nameplate may return

General Motors CEO Mary Barra has confirmed the company’s intention to stop producing the all-electric Chevrolet Bolt before the end of the year, InsideEV reports. She added that the Bolt badge may later make a comeback on a more modern, more affordable battery car.

According to Barra, however popular and demanded the Bolt may be, its design is simply way too outdated and costs a lot to mass-produce. All modern GM cars based on the Ultium platform take advantage of new, cost-efficient batteries, while the Bolt EV strictly requires older and expensive power cells.

When the compact becomes history, it will leave the Equinox in the position of GM’s cheapest EV on the market. The Equinox is slated for launch in the fall of 2023 with the expected starting price of U.S. $30,000.
