Ford shows off its F-150 “SuperTruck” for the Pikes Peak race

The Ford F-150 Lightning SuperTruck may slightly resemble its mass-market namesake, but neither the bodywork nor the powertrain has anything in common with the production pickup. The hardcore one-off EV will hit the Race to the Clouds track this Sunday, June 23.

With a massive front splitter, a matching rear diffuser, wide side sill extensions and a giant rear wing, the SuperTruck looks all but poised to claim the top prize. Considered together, its aerodynamic parts provide it with over 2.7 metric tons (6,000 lbs) of downforce at 240 km/h (150 mph). It also lacks visible headlights, but those are concealed inside the ducts at the front end.

Three electric motor and a lithium-polymer battery pack deliver over 1,400 horsepower (1,044 kilowatts) to the wheels. Purpose-built suspension, carbon-ceramic brakes and magnesium wheels shod in Pirelli P Zero tires should help keep things in control on the precarious mountain trail.

Romain Dumas will be piloting the extreme truck at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb this weekend.
