Mazda sees electrification as its ticket into the premium car market

The Japanese marque envisions a two-stage transition to premium vehicle production, the second of which involves designing EVs.

The corresponding statement was made by Tom Donnelly, Senior VP of Mazda North America, in an interview to Automotive News. He pointed out that the company started its transformation with the launch of the large CX-90 SUV (shown below) in February this year. The premium status of the vehicle is highlighted not just by such superficial features as dimensions, trim quality and options, but also by its powertrain. The CX-90 utilizes an inline six-cylinder engine and an all-wheel-drive system biased towards the rear end.

Later on, the company plans to design a similar crossover SUV for Europe named the CX-80, which will be smaller in size and largely powered by hybrid systems. Customers in the United States will additionally get a smaller, two-row SUV named the CX-70.

Moving on to the second stage of the premium transition, Mazda will design a number of all-electric cars to complement its sole MX-30 model. By the end of the decade, the company hopes to have at least one full-electric counterpart to every ICE model on offer.
