Mercedes-AMG previews an all-electric supercar

Mercedes-Benz has just confirmed the rumors that a battery-powered AMG supercar is coming by posting official photos of a disguised prototype EV built for tests. Although it neglected to supply any details, it’s already clear that the company has the range-topping Porsche Taycan firmly in its sights.

Based on the images, the still-unnamed AMG EV has a smooth, flowing body with five doors and what looks like an active aerodynamic kit. You can also see six round segments in the taillights looking similar to those of the Vision AMG concept shown a while ago (see video). It would make sense for the company’s first performance EV to have much in common with that concept.

All we know right now is that the car is based on a brand-new platform called AMG.EA and is running pre-production tests in the colder climes of northern Sweden. Mercedes explains that there are still plenty of tests left to run in a wide variety of weather conditions before the car can be considered ready for production – this is why the specifications will have to wait until the design is finalized. Still, it says we should be looking forward to a groundbreaking power-to-weight ratio in an EV and a completely new, high-tech battery array on board.
