Mitsubishi ponders a mid-size pickup for North America

According to CarBuzz citing Mitsubishi Motors CEO Takao Kato, the automaker plans to introduce a new pickup truck in the United States in the next few years, based on an existing Nissan chassis.

Mitsubishi’s current lineup in North America is rather outdated. At the same time, mid-size pickup trucks find around 600,000 new owners there every year, suggesting that the growth potential is there. The current Mitsubishi L200 may still be a viable truck, but importing it into the USA with all the tariffs in place is no longer viable, admits Kato.

He declined to answer what particular platform the company intended to use for the new truck. Still, all evidence points to the next-generation Nissan Frontier. It’s currently in development and expected to debut in 2028. Once out and about, both models will compete with the Ford Range and the Toyota Tacoma first and foremost.

Mitsubishi’s global operations seem to go livelier compared to its business in the States. For example, Ralliart is building an extreme cross-country truck for Asia’s AXCR-2026 rally (see video).
