Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV gets revised 4WD for handling and stability

Mitsubishi claims that the next generation of the Outlander hybrid offers much higher steering precision and stability alongside multiple new drive modes.

The crossover SUV will keep its dual electric motors mounted one per axle, but the new electronics will distribute the torque more efficiently based on road conditions and the driver’s style.

S-AWC (Super-All Wheel Control) will be able to half-brake rear wheels, as opposed to the current version of this feature only capable of applying front brakes. This should relieve the front axle of some of the stress, improve tire efficiency, and ensure more confident handling.

Drivers will be able to choose from seven drive modes, including Eco, Standard, Gravel, Snow and Sport, plus two unannounced ones.

The premiere date remains to be revealed later. Mitsubishi said a while ago that both the five- and the seven-seat variants of the Outlander PHEV would be getting larger batteries than they currently have.

The new Outlander generation debuted in February with all-new looks and different technological underpinnings.
