It’s Official: Porsche axes the ICE Macan in Europe

The current generation of the Porsche Macan will leave the European markets in the coming spring, a representative of the company confirmed in an interview to Automotive News Europe.

He added that the decision had nothing to do with emission laws: apparently, the Macan no longer met the cybersecurity requirements in Europe due to its outdated platform and digital tech.

The crossover SUV celebrated its market debut nine years ago and was last updated in 2021. Porsche reasoned that making it compliant with the new UNECE WP.29 cybersecurity standard would be prohibitively expensive. Were the company to continue selling it on the Old World markets, it would end up fined up to €30,000 per unit sold.

As a result, a decision was reached to pull the Macan from all 27 EU markets for the time being. The non-EU countries in Europe and other markets where the CUV is on sale will keep it for a while longer.

The forced removal of the Macan from the EU space spells trouble for Porsche, which named the car among its bestsellers in October this year. According to Dataforce, the German sports car maker managed to find owners for roughly 20,000 Macan units in Europe in January–October 2023.
