Elderly Renault racer fetches $75k

One out of no more than 159 Renault Clio V6 Trophy examples styled with the standard hatchback body has just changed hands for 75,000 USD.

The second-gen Clio emerged in 1998, and the V6 Trophy version followed a year later. It is not road-legal, lacks an interior and has a number of track-oriented components, including the dashboard, levers, a roll cage and bucket seats.

Power comes from a 2.9-liter V6 linked to a six-speed sequential gearbox. The engine sits behind the wheels within the wheelbase and drives the rear axle with 285 PS (281 hp / 210 kW). The body is a custom conversion, and the listing fails to mention any acceleration times.

The Trophy series went on sale in 1999–2003, followed by an extra batch of 1,555 Clio V6 Phase 1 cars and 1,309 Clio V6 Phase 2 cars in 2001–2005. The former had 230 and the latter 255 metric horsepower (227 and 252 hp; 169 and 188 kW, respectively). Unlike the car that was sold for $75,000 this weekend, both of those models were street-legal.
