Next-gen Subaru WRX debuts with 271 PS, adaptive suspension, and more

Subaru has unveiled the next generation of its WRX sedan, which apparently packs considerably less power than expected.

The 2.4-liter flat engine under the hood produces 271 PS (267 hp / 200 kW), mere 3 horsepower above its predecessor and well under the rumored output of 300 PS (296 hp / 221 kW). On the plus side, the turbocharger response has improved considerably. No acceleration times have been revealed so far.

The all-wheel-drive system stays stock, but buyers can now ditch the six-speed manual in for an improved CVT, which now switches between its eight virtual gears much faster than before.

For the first time on record, the WRX features an adaptive suspension system with Comfort, Normal, and Sport shock settings. It is only available in the GT trim level, though.

Also on the list for that version are Recaro bucket seats with eight electric adjustments, fabric trim with red stitching for contrast, the full EyeSight package, and 18-inch wheels instead of the usual 17-inch ones.

The arches now sport black plastic overlays that lend the car an SUV-like appearance. Subaru claims that certain body elements now weigh less than in the old generation, but once again, without any specifics.

Interior highlights include aluminum pedal pads, a squared-off wheel, and hardware controls found next to a vertical 11.6-inch touchscreen display.
