For the first time on record, Elon Musk’s electric car company headed the list of the most popular automakers in the United States with 491,000+ vehicles delivered. It came ahead of BMW, which had held the leadership for three years in a row, and marked the first time in more than two decades when a U.S. car marque dominated the rating.
Compared to 2021, Tesla sold 44 percent more cars in the USA in 2022, pulling far ahead of its nearest competition. Specifically, BMW sold 332,388 cars, Mercedes-Benz sold 286,764, Lexus moved 258,704 and Audi found buyers for 186,875. The Tesla product lineup is much slimmer than that of its competition, currently consisting of only four models – but it would seem that a wide model range alone doesn’t translate into sale numbers.
This made Tesla the undisputed leader of the EV market in North America without close rivals. Ford trailed with only 55,075 EVs sold. Audi led in the luxury car segment with 15,677 cars sold.
All in all, Tesla produced 1,369,611 EVs worldwide in 2022 (+47% year-on-year) and sold 1,313,851 units (+40% YoY). It reached an all-time high in car production rates in Q4, but fell short of its own target figures.
