Tesla CyberCab set for mass production in 2026

Tesla promises to start assembling its self-driving “CyberCab” taxi fleet in Q2 2026, reports electric-vehicles.com quoting CEO Elon Musk. The autonomous electric car has two seats and no traditional controls, like the wheel or the pedals.

Speaking at a conference dedicated to the automaker’s latest quarter in business, Musk said the CyberCab would be perceived “like a living creature”, stressing that the recent improvements done to its AI were “radical.”

On the outside, the EV looks like a Model 3 or Model Y, just with two doors swinging upwards to open. The rear window is absent, as are the side mirrors. The interior houses only two passenger seats divided by an armrest with cup holders. The dashboard is still there, as is a large infotainment display in the middle, and there is a spacious trunk past the partition wall behind the seats.

All technical specifications remain to be announced. Pricing-wise, early estimates placed the CyberCab at a $30,000 point, but Tesla hasn’t been particularly known for honoring its promises regarding production start dates and prices. It will probably be best to wait until the actual launch for the details.

In his speech at the conference, Musk also once again confirmed the intention to make his RoboTaxi fleet currently operating in Austin, TX in test mode completely unsupervised. At the same time, he admitted that launching similar services in other cities may have to wait until the technology gets better. According to him, even just one accident involving a robotaxi will be “guaranteed to make headlines all over the world”, and that’s not the kind of publicity the company wants.
