The BMW Skytop is made for elegance, not mass production

BMW, which has been frequenting the annual Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy in the recent years, has come to this year’s event with a beautiful Targa car called the Skytop. It incorporates design cues from a dozen of the Bavarian automaker’s classics and is little more than a show car.

BMW claims that the designers drew their inspiration from such legends as the Z8 and the 503. The former comes to mind when you look at the shark-nosed front end and slim taillights, while the latter has apparently donated its headlights, hood cover and flat, elongated rear to the project. A removable hardtop consists of two panels that you can just stash in the trunk when not used.

In terms of proportions, the Skytop comes closest to the latest 8-Series, so we are going to assume it was built on the same chassis. The interior in particular looks nearly identical to the 8-Series except for minor trim differences.

For the powertrain, BMW claims it picked “the most powerful V8 in the lineup.” This could be referring to the 4.4-liter mill powering the M8 Competition with 625 PS (616 hp / 460 kW), but the details aren’t available.
