Ex-F1 champion’s McLaren Elva headed to auction in Abu Dhabi

An auction will be held right on the Yas Marina Circuit during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on November 25 dedicated, among other things, to a McLaren Elva speedster worth an estimated $2.5–3.0 million.

The Elva debuted four years ago. It had neither a roof of any kind nor a windshield, meaning the only way to drive it was in a racing helmet. Its 4.0-liter V8 boosted to 815 PS (804 hp / 600 kW) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque let it sprint 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in under three seconds.

McLaren had planned a much bigger production run, but only 149 units were made in the end. This particular example was number 114 to leave the factory premises last year and still has just 5 kilometers (3 miles) on the odo. It is owned by none other than Fernando Alonso, retired twice-champion of Formula 1, who is expected to attend the auction in person and hand over the keys to the winning bidder.
