Rumor: First Mercedes-AMG EV coming in 2025

Reports are coming in that Mercedes-AMG will be unveiling its first fully electric car in 2025. It will allegedly be a five-door liftback based on a brand-new platform known as the AMG.EA, with powertrain options reaching 1,014 PS (1,000 hp / 746 kW).

The rumor claims that UK-based company Yasa, part of Mercedes-Benz group, is already busy designing the motors. The main goal is to come up with motors that are much lighter and smaller than the current designs. A single motor is expected to weigh as little as 24 kilograms (53 lbs) and churn out up to 480 PS (473 hp / 353 kW) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque.

The AMG.EA chassis will reportedly support multiple motors, but it doesn’t mean that the upcoming AMG EVs will all have a four-wheel drive. On the contrary, the company may as well decide to put two motors on the rear axle to reduce the air resistance at the front as much as possible while keeping the trunk area in the back large. New, thinner power cells will also find use in the car, resulting in a 40% greater power storage density, the source claims.

It sounds like the last year’s Vision AMG (see below) is the closest to the electric car planned for 2025 model year release. The company first mentioned the AMG.EA platform when it unveiled that concept and praised its smart layout. If the rumors prove accurate, then the new EV will most likely pick up where the latest AMG GT left off.
